DAVID MITCHELL

David Mitchell, 91, of Grinnell died on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services for David Mitchell will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the First Friends Church in Grinnell, with the Rev. Tod Follette and the Rev. Keith Briggs officiating. Kathleen McCune will be the organist. Casket bearers will include Cody Kueker, Randon Hill, Brydon Hill, Jeff Robinson, John Stocker, Gina Stocker, Tonya McGuire, Katrina Robinson and Paul Thompson. The Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial unit will present the American flag to the family. Interment will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The family will be present at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell from 6 to 8 p.m. today (Monday).

He was born on Feb. 10, 1916, near Lynnville to Clyde and Tauntja "Tillie" Van Gorp Mitchell. The family moved to Gilman where he attended public school.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre.

On March 25, 1943, he married Eleanor Anderson in Pittsburgh, Calif. The couple farmed south of Grinnell and later moved to town. He worked as a truck driver and warehouseman with the Vernon Company in Newton until his retirement in 1981.

He was a member of the First Friends Church in Grinnell and the local American Legion post. He enjoyed working on his farm and in his yard and cheering on the Chicago Cubs and the Minnesota Vikings.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Dianne Smith of Grinnell and Patricia Thompson of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Cornie Mitchell, and a sister, Bertha Wertz.

Memorials may be directed to the First Friends Church in Grinnell or to the Parkinson's Association.
