GARLAN WELSH, MAGISTRATE, DIES AT 60

Poweshiek County Judicial Magistrate Garlan Welsh, 60, of Montezuma died suddenly Friday evening at her home of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services for Mrs. Welsh will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell, with the Rev. Hugh A. Shiveley, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist will be Mrs. Willard Heffner. Pallbearers will be Gene Breiting, Clair Strand, Michael Mahaffey, Charles M. Manly, James H. Miller, Earl Mitchell, Roger Sunleaf and Harold Wiedow. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of William and Nona L. Copeland Potts, she was born July 12, 1915, in Lenox, Iowa. The family later moved to Grinnell, and she was graduated from Grinnell High School in 1933. In 1934, she was graduated from Capital City Commercial College.

She was married to William R. Welsh on April 17, 1938, in Grinnell. The couple had three children.

Mrs. Welsh was one of two judicial magistrates in Poweshiek County. She had also been deputy clerk of the Poweshiek County District Court for four years. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, William; her children, Mrs. Jere (Linda Sue) Maddux of Ames, William R. Welsh III of Forest City, and Deborah Ann Welsh, a senior at Simpson College; three grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Nona Potts of Montezuma; and a brother, Willis K. Potts of Portage, Wis. She was preceded in death by her father in 1971 and a brother, Richard Potts, in 1968.
