Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Steffy funeral home for Mrs. John Carter, who died Saturday morning at the Montezuma hospital. The Rev. J.H. Krenmyre, pastor of the Methodist church, had charge of the funeral services. Burial was in the Montezuma cemetery.

Following is the obituary:

Emma L. Slagle was born January 6, 1866, in Brooklyn, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. She was married to John S. Carter September 10, 1890, at Oxford, Ia., at the home of her sister, Mrs. S.B. Shirk.

Five children were born to this union, two, Agnes S. and Leo L., dying in infancy. Three sons survive their mother: Leland J. and Ray Mayo of Newton and Harry K. of Montezuma.

With the exception of four years spent in Brooklyn, Mrs. Carter has lived since her marriage on a farm about three miles north of Montezuma. Mrs. Carter attended the Methodist church both at Montezuma and Brooklyn.

She is survived by her husband and three sons; two brothers, Vern Slagle of Brooklyn and L.G. Slagle of Council Bluffs; one grandson, Gene, of Council Bluffs; and two sisters, Cora McIlrath of Eldon, Mo., and Minnie Shirk of Minneapolis.

For eight years Mrs. Carter has been an invalid, most of the time being confined to her bed.
