The Brooklyn (IA) Chronicle; June 5, 1919

Mr. D.C. Sleggel, the son of Mr. George and Eliza Sleggel, was born in Holmes County, Ohio, May 11th, 1843 and died at his home in Brooklyn, Iowa Friday evening, May 30, 1919, aged 76 years and 19 days. He was one of a family of eleven children, all of which are gone now save the youngest brother, O.D. Sleggel of Coon Rapids, Iowa.

Mr. Sleggel came, with his parents, to Iowa in 1864 and they made their home two miles west of Brooklyn. Jan. 26th,1870, he was married to Miss Sarah Tinker. This home was blessed with six children, Mrs. J.W. Frizzell, Brooklyn, Iowa; Oliver C. and D.K., of Lake Hamilton, Florida; Mr. E.G. Binegar of Grinnell, Iowa,; Charles E. of Brooklyn and Mrs. Edna Smith, whose death occurred about two years ago.

Brother Sleggel was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Ohio Cavalry Feb. 27th, 1864. He was with General Sherman in his march to the sea, and was honorably discharged at Lexington, N.C., July 20th, 1865. He was a member of the John T. Drake Post of the G.A.R., No. 321.

For fifty-one years this community has been their home with the exception of three years spent in Texas. Five years ago they left the farm and moved to Brooklyn to enjoy the quiet of retired life.

He was converted in a revival camp meeting in Texas and became a member of the Methodist church. He remained a faithful member until the day of his death. He was with his comrades at the Memorial service on Sabbath morning and also attended the evening service. He suffered from a stroke Wednesday morning about nine o'clock and from the effects of this condition he never recovered so as to speak. His transfer from this to the world beyond took place Friday evening about five o'clock. He had a happy and genial way which made for him many friends among both young and old. He will be greatly missed in the home, in the community and among his comrades with whom he spent so many pleasant hours.

The family have the sympathy of the community in the midst of their sorrow. The funeral took place at the Methodist church Sabbath afternoon, conducted by Rev. John W. Pool, the pastor.
