BENJAMIN W. GRIER
Funeral services were held from the Hartwick Congregational church, June 12, for Benjamin W. Grier, who died June 9 at the home of his son in Waterloo June 9. Rev. Donald Tuck officiated the 2 p.m. rites with Mrs. Clair Erickson as organist.
Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Ryan and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Gabriel were flower attendants. Casket bearers were Paul Grier, Dale Grier, Ralph Atherton, Mark Grier, Laverne Grier and Burdett Jack, all nephews. Burial was in the Hartwick cemetery.
Benjamin Walker Grier was born July 21, 1883 at the family home near Deep River, the eighth child of Benton and Mary Jane Sanders Grier.
After completing high school, he attended Capital City Commercial college, Des Moines, from which he graduated in 1905. He worked in the Deep River bank until 1927. Then he entered the insurance business until the time of his retirement.
He was a member of the Hartwick Congregational Church.
Mr. Grier married the former Jeannie L. Hakeman, Sept. 21, 1909. To this union four children were born: Mrs. H.L. (Mildred) Sands of West Union; Alma Pegram of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. H.D. (Alta) Carlson of Toledo and Perry of Waterloo.
Mr. Grier was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannie May 11, parents, brothers and sister, one granddaughter. Survivors include his children, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
