BENTON GRIER WAS LIFE RESIDENT OF POWESHIEK COUNTY
Funeral services for Benton Grier, Deep River farmer and painter, were conducted by Rev. William Morehouse at the Methodist church at 2 p.m. Monday June 25. Mrs. Clint Icenbice played the musical selections and accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Icenbice who sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and"Beyond the Sunset."
Interment was in Golden Rod cemetery under direction of the Steffy Funeral Home. Casket bearers were Elza Wilcox, Louis Rieck, Glenn Holderness, Carl Baustian, George Wolf and Forrest Hopwood.
Benton, son of Eliza and Charles Grier, was born in Lincoln township, Poweshiek county, Jan. 18, 1901, and died away at his home in Deep River, June 22 at 61 years of age.
He attended rural school and Deep River high school. When a child, he united with the Methodist church.
On Nov. 17, 1926, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Fogle, to this union five children were born, a daughter Betty Louise, died in infancy.
They have always made their home in the Deep River community, where he was engaged in farming and later, followed the painter's trade.
He is survived by his wife and three sons, Jack, Phillip and Jerry; one daughter, Opal Snitker, 15 grandchildren, his mother, Mrs. Eliza Grier, and three sisters, Mrs. Martha Hillman, Mrs. Margaret Knupp, and Mrs. Florence Lester, other relatives and many friends.
