CLARA GETTYS

Clara Bertha Gettys, 96, a resident of Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan, died at the home Monday, May 20.

Funeral services were conducted at Chester Cemetery near Grinnell, with the Pauley Funeral Home of Harlan in charge of arrangements.

She was born March 20, 1900, at Chester Center near Grinnell. She attended rural school and Chester Center High School, later graduating from Grinnell High School. She attended Grinnell College for two years.

On June 15, 1921, she was married to Joe L. Gettys in Chester Center. They lived in Alto, Marathon, Sibley, Harlan, Atlantic and Oskaloosa, returing to Harlan in 1986.

Following her husband's death in 1988, Mrs. Gettys continued to live in Harlan. She became a resident of Baptist Memorial Home in October 1994.

She was a member of the Congregational Church in Oskaloosa and was a former member of the church choir. She was a member of the P.E.O. in Harlan.

Surviving are her son, Gene; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Genevieve Hise of Seminole, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Joe Jr.; and four sisters, Almira, Gladys, Selma and Beulah.
