ALVA MCDONALD SERVICES TODAY
Alva Lavern McDonald, 74, of 717 Spring St., Grinnell, died late Monday evening at Grinnell General Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Winford Clifton, pastor of the First Friends Church of Grinnell, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Leonard Pearce, and pallbearers were Earl Carmer, Eldon Gerald, LeRoy Johnson, Larry McVey, Roger Moyer and Marlyn Olson. Burial was at Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom.
The son of Corneleius J. and Lucy Bunker McDonald, he was born Nov. 28, 1900, near Zearing, Iowa. He attended rural school near his home. On May 9, 1936, he was married to Gladys Hope McDonald in Hampton. The couple had six children.
Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. McDonald lived in Eldora and Iowa Falls before moving to Grinnell in 1949. Mr. McDonald was a member of the Grinnell Assembly of God Church. He had worked at Windpower Manufacturing Co. in Newton and Smith-Jones, Inc., Midwest Division, in Kellogg. Following his retirement, he worked for the Cargill Seed Corn Co., Grinnell.
Survivors include six children, William E. McDonald of Carrizo, Tex., LaVern D. McDonald who is stationed with the U.S. Navy in Harlan, S.C., Mrs. Harlan (Alice) Mowrey of New Sharon, Mrs. Charles (Margaret) Bunn of Grinnell, Mrs. Melvin (Pauline) Sieck of Rte. 4, Grinnell, and Wendell D. McDonald of Grinnell; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. M.E. (Ada) Sheeley of Iowa Falls.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, in March of this year; his parents; two brothers, John and Delos McDonald; and two sisters, Mrs. Irene Norman and Amelia McDonald.
