JOHN F. DRYDEN

John F. Dryden was born in Adams county, Ohio, September 25, 1841, and died at his home four miles north of Montezuma, Iowa, July 26, 1921, aged 79 years, 10 months and 1 day.

He grew to young manhood in his native state and in 1863 enlisted for three years or during the war as a volunteer soldier in the defense of the Republic. He served in Co. A, 2nd Ohio Heavy Artillery. After two years of service he was wounded and sent to the hospital. He received his discharge May 12, 1865, at Camp Dennison, Ohio. In 1866 he came to Iowa and located on a farm near Montezuma, in which neighborhood he since resided.

On March 28th, 1869, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary F. Hunnicutt. To this union were born five children, three boys and two girls. One of the sons, Bertie, died at the age of six years.

In early youth Mr. Dryden united with the Methodist Episcopal church in New *Venna, Ohio, and on coming to Iowa transferred his membership to the Montezuma church. He was also a member of the I.O.O.f. lodge and the Grand Army Post.

For the past ten years his health has been failing and for some time he has been confined to his home. He suffered much and has failed rapidly during the past year. Death came last Tuesday afternoon and he entered into rest.

There survive to mourn his passing the widow and the four children: Eva Dee, Fred F., and Arthur E., at home, and Krilla Smothers, residing east of Montezuma. There are three grandchildren, Wilma, Louis and Louise Smothers. Of his father's family two sisters, Mrs. T.W. Searight of Newton, Iowa, and Mrs. Allie McBride of Hillsboro, Ohio, and two brothers, J.H. Dryden, who lately returned from California and will make his home in Montezuma, and S.R. Dryden of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon a 1:30 o'clock, the pastor in charge of the service at the church, and interment was made in the Masonic Odd Fellows cemetery, the Grand Army having charge of the burial.

Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Dryden, Long Beach, Cal.; S.A. Dryden, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Searight, Iowa City; Mrs. Jessie Schaberg, University Place, Lincoln, Neb.; Mrs. Estella Sharp, Newton; Mrs. Ethel Abraham, Newton; Miss Anna Phelps, Oskaloosa.--Montezuma Republican.
