JOHN S. DRYDEN, OLD SOLDIER, DEAD
John S. Dryden, a veteran of the Civil War and an old time resident of Poweshiek county, passed away January 20 at his home in New Sharon where he had lived since 1892. Mr. Dryden was born in Highland county, Ohio, but after the death of his mother, his father brought the children to Montezuma in 1859.
Mr. Dryden enlisted in the Union army in the spring of 1864 as a member of Co. F, 10th Iowa Infantry and served until honorably discharged in Washington, D.C., in 1865.
He joined the Methodist church in Lynnville in 1880. In the year 1883 he was united in marriage with Emma Arnold. To this union were born four children only one of whom, John Willard Dryden, of Ottumwa, is now living.
Mr. Dryden had been in failing health since 1920, when he suffered an attack of flu which left him in a weakened condition. Death resulted from a paralytic stroke.
He was an uncle of Mrs. H.F. Preston and of D.M. Cox of this city, who attended the funeral services last Friday.
