DELMAR BAUSTIAN

AUTO HIT HIM AS HE LAY ON SIDE OF ROAD
--------------------------------------
Victim Thrown from Own Car as It Turned End Over End.

Delmar Baustian, 45-year-old farmer residing two miles south and a mile west of the Sheridan store, received fatal injuries in an accident on Highway 63 about 7:15 o'clock Saturday evening. The car he was driving plunged into a ditch on the east side of the road as he was headed south and he was thrown onto the highway. According to witnesses, a second auto ran over him as he lay on the highway. He died at the St. Francis hospital Sunday about 8:00 a.m.

Max Arnold, on his way to the baskeball tournament at Tama, accompanied by Janice Connelly, Lyle Wiley and Tom Farmer, all of Grinnell, was about 200 yards from the Baustian car when it suddenly appeared to hurtle end over end. The accident occurred about a half mile south of the Poweshiek-Tama county line. Occupants of the Arnold car believed Baustian's auto must have turned over before it hit the ditch as it ended up on its wheels at the side of the road.

FELL OUT OF DOOR

Baustian apparently fell out the door of the car, landing at the side of the paving. Arnold says he noticed him barely in time to escape hitting him and after passing on a few yards, stopped on the highway shoulder and returned to the injured man. Members of Arnold's party reported that the driver of the second car from the south did not see the man on the road and passed over his body.

Tom Farmer summoned an ambulance from Tama and while its arrival was awaited an unidentified army doctor stopped and attended to Baustian as well as he could. The accident victim was not unconscious and did not think he was badly hurt. He was taken to a clinic at Tama for emergency treatment and then brought to the hospital at Grinnell.

BADLY LACERATED

According to the local physician who took charge of him, Baustian had been badly lacerated and probably suffered several internal injuries. His death was attributed to a combination of causes, including shock, loss of blood and the internal injuries.

He is survived by his wife and five daughters, Ruth, Doris, Mildred, Helen and Shirley, in addition to numerous other relatives in this vicinity.

Funeral services will be held from the Methodist church in Grinnell Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, in charge of Rev. W.S. Kight of Des Moines, pastor of the Sheridan church. Burial will be in Hazelwood cemetery.
