OBITUARY ~ HOWARD DON SMITH

Howard Don SMITH, Jr., son of Howard Don and Norma SEARLES SMITH, was born May 21, 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida and died Wednesday, October 1, 1986 at the Grinnell General Hospital of a heart condition. He was 43 years, 4 months and 10 days of age.

Don moved to Mount Ayr, Iowa with his family in 1945, where he graduated from High School in 1961. He was a graduate of Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Mo. in 1964.

Don married Shirley SAVILLE on August 25, 1963 at Redding, Iowa. There were two sons born to them. Todd Christopher and Troy Howard. They lived in Winterset and Springfield, Illinois where he taught school and later was an Insurance Adjuster before moving to Grinnell in 1977.

While living in Grinnell he owned and operated SMITH Automotive and was an Assistant Claims Manager for Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. Don was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Grinnell where he taught a Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Grinnell; two sons, Todd and Troy of Grinnell, his step-father and his mother: Homer and Norma SMITH McCLINTOCK of Mount Ayr; one brother, Stephen SMITH of Mount Ayr; and his siter, Mary Jane THOMPSON of Des Moines; three step-sisters and a step-brother, nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his father in 1971.

Funeral services wer held Monday, October 6, 1986, at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell conducted by Rev. Raymond LOTT. Music was by Mrs. Kathleen HEFFNER, Organist.

Pallbearers were Jack GROSS, Bill SAVILLE, Raymond SAVILLE, Robert SHAFER, Jon THOMPSON and Wilbur Van RYSWYK, with interment in Hazelwood Cemetery, Grinnell, conducted by Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell.
