Obituary dated Feb. 6, 1903
The Brooklyn Chronicle speaks as follows of Mrs. John T. Scott who died at Brooklyn on the 24th of Jan.:
Maria Isabel Shimer was born in Berlin, Holmes county, Ohio, July 26, 1842. On Thanksgiving day 1868, she was married to John T. Scott. To them were born two children, a daughter, who died when a little child, and a son, Oliver who with his father is left to mourn her loss. When a young lady of eighteen, she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church in Brooklyn, Iowa, and has been for over forty years, a loyal member of the same, a devoted follower of the Lord Jesus, one whose life has been a constant sermon of the saving power of the Gospel of Christ. For twenty-nine years she has been an invalid, and the greater portion of the time an intense sufferer, but so great was her spirit of self surrender, that she always held her own sufferings in the back ground, and ever carried sunshine and joy into the lives of others. She clung to life with great tenacity, not that she was afraid to die, but because she felt that she was needed by those whom she loved, and whose lives she felt would be desolated by her going away. For several months it has been apparent to those who were near her, that the time of her going was rapidly drawing near, but this fact she would not recognize so great was her desire to save and help others.
