Mrs. Isabel Shimer died at the home of her son-in-law, John T. Scott, March 13, aged 83 years. She was one of the pioneers of Poweshiek, having come to Brooklyn in 1855. The Chronicle says of her: "Mother Shimer early connected herself with the Episcopal church, and her whole life has been a beautiful example of consistent and devoted attachment to the teachings of her Divine Master, and an earnest endeavor to exemplify them in good works. Her hand was ever outstretched to the poor and needy, and the sick and afflicted found her presence like a benediction. She carried into the sick room a warm and loving heart and her gentle hand has soothed many a fevered brow. The years as they piled upon her could not dull the warmth of heart and to her last conscious moment she exhibited the same care and anxiety for those who were near and dear to her, and she closed a well rounded life full of years and honors. Her youngest son, Jefferson, was a member of Co. H, 28th Iowa Infantry, and died in the hospital just before the taking of Vicksburg. Mrs.John T. Scott, her youngest daughter, has been her constant companion since infancy, and they have never been separated more than a month or more during the entire time. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F.E. Judd, of Marshalltown, who for many years was her pastor who paid a beautiful and touching tribute to her many virtues. She lived a noble, earnest christian life and has gone to her reward."
