LOCAL RESIDENT OWEN J. FLANAGAN DIES THIS MORNING

Owen J. Flanagan, 88, Grinnell, died early this morning (Thursday) at a local hospital. He had been in failing health the last few months and had been hospitalized three days.

Requiem high mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Mary's Catholic church with the Rev. Leo V. Kuebrich, pastor, officiating. Rosary will be recited at 3:15 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Francis Comerford, Leo Devereux, Jim Higdon, John Hotchkin, Tony Gill, and Merle O'Brien. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery here.

The son of William and Katherine Kelly Flanagan, he was born Sept. 7, 1873, near Sully and attended the local rural schools near his home. On Dec. 3, 1902, at Sacred Heart church in Newton, he was united in marriage with Minnie DeBruyn.

To this union were born four children: Mrs. James (Verona) McGrory and Owen Flanagan, both of Chelsea, and Earl J. Flanagan and Leo W. Flanagan, both of Grinnell.

Mr. Flanagan had lived in the Grinnell area for 42 years and farmed south of Grinnell. He retired from farming in 1943 and he and Mrs. Flanagan had made their home in Grinnell since. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and had been a member of the Holy Name Society of the church.

He is survived by his widow, Minnie, and his four children. Also surviving are five grandchildren; one brother, John Flanagan, and one sister, Mrs. Emery (Annie) Schmitz, both of Grinnell.

Mr. Flanagan was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Martin Flanagan and William Flanagan; three sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Julia) Dowling, Mrs. Phillip (Mary) Hotchkin, and Mrs. William (Margaret) Devereux; and two grandchildren.
