HARLAN C. DARE

Harlan C. Dare, 84, of 904 Penrose St., Grinnell, died of pneumonia Saturday, Jan. 26, at Grinnell General Hospital.

The Funeral Mass conducted Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Dr. Anthony G. Farrell officiating, assisted by William Olson, deacon.

Music was provided by Kathy Lynch, organist, and members of St. Mary's Choir.

Pallbearers were Mark Hendrickson, Rick Herzberg, Robbie Phipps, Kent Porter, Kim Walker and Steve Walker. Honorary bearers were Gary Baldwin, Rob Baldwin, Mike Brenneman, Craig Dare, Mick Jones, Jerry Lievens, Ryan Walker, Nick Walker and Scott Walker.

Burial was in Chester Cemetery.

Fraternal rites were conducted Tuesday by members of B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1266.

The son of Edwin and Minnie Warren Dare, he as born May 9, 1906, at the family home in Chester Township. He attended rural schools and was a 1924 graduate of Grinnell High School. He attended the University of Commerce in Des Moines. While living in Des Moines he was a member of the U.S. Army 138th Infantry medical detachment. Due to his father's poor health, he returned to Chester Township to manage the family farm.

He was married to Viola Walker May 2, 1934, in Burlington. They farmed in Chester Township for 36 years. After the death of Mrs. Dare's parents, they raised her younger twin brothers, Floyd and Lloyd Walker. The couple moved to Grinnell where Mr. Dare was a sales representative for Cargill Seed Corn Co.

He was a 50-year member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational of Grinnell, a 56-year member of the Sonora Grange and a member of the Poweshiek Grange, Iowa State Grange and National Grange. He was former chairman of the Rock Creek Grange Camp. He also formerly served as chaplain of B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1255. He was a former township trustee and member of the Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and George; and three sisters, Mildred Hendrickson, Ada Iverson and Camilla Evans.

Memorials in Mr. Dare's name may be made to St. Mary's Church Elevator Fund or to the American Heart Association.
