LAST RITES SAID FOR CECIL MYERS

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home in Grinnell for Cecil S. Myers, 84, who died Sept. 29 at Friendship Manor Nursing Home in Grinnell.

The Rev. Newell Davis and the Rev. Ralph Beebe officiated at the services.

Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Lawrence Pedersen, Harris Stafford, Elmer Iverson, Irving Howell, Gordon Van Donselaar and John Peters. Honorary pallbearers were Peter Staffanou, H.P. Broyles, W.B. Hoyt, Ellis Brown, Roy Mushrush and L.B. Watt.

Masonic services were conducted by Hermon Lodge No. 273 and all the grand officers of the Grand Lodge of Iowa were present.

The eldest surviving son of Thomas and Stella Gregson Myers, Mr. Myers was born Oct. 12, 1885 near Ewart, Iowa. During his early boyhood, the family moved to Grinnell and then to Atlantic in 1894.

After attending school in Atlantic, Mr. Myers entered Coe College and Academy in Cedar Rapids. He left college to accept employement with the Lennox Co. in Marshalltown. When the family moved back to Grinnell from Atlantic in 1907, Mr. Myers rejoined them and spent the remainder of his life in Grinnell, employed first by the Cooperative Delivery and Spaulding. He then entered the postal service where he served for 30 years, first as a letter carrier, then qualifying as a clerk.

After his retirement from the postal service, Mr. Myers served in the Masonic Library in Cedar Rapids and also visited Masonic lodges over Iowa as a lecturer and instructor.

On Oct. 16, 1909 Mr. Myers was united in marriage to Bess Reynolds, who preceded him in death on July 27, 1968. No children were born to this union.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Myers was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters--Hazel and Amy, and one brother, Weaver.

Mr. Myers was a member of the Grinnell United Church of Christ--Congregational. Last year he completed his 50th year in the Rebekahs at the time of his death.

Mr. Myers was a member of the Hermon Lodge, No. 273, A.F. & A.M. and served as its worshipful Master in 1937. He also belonged to Eastern Star (Beulah Chapter) the Red Cross of Constantine, the White Shrine of Jerusalem and had attained the 32 degrees of the Scottish Rite at the Zarephath Consistory of Davenport, Iowa. He had served as officer in the Grand Lodge of Iowa as Senior Grand Deacon and Junior Grand Warden and as Secretary and served on many Grand Masonic Committees.
