JOSEPHINE HARTZELL

Josephine Hartzell, 101, of Grinnell died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at St. Francis Manor.

A graveside service will be held Friday, Aug. 27, at 9:30 a.m. at Hazelwood Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Ogata, retired, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grinnell Senior Center.

The daughter of Marion Calvin and Ida Florence Perry Hartzell, she was born Nov. 29, 1902, in Grinnell. She was raised on a farm near Grinnell and received her education in the Grinnell School District after which she attended secretarial school in Marshalltown. She was employed as a typist for a firm in Nevada and also wrote and sold articles to several magazines and newspapers. She later returned to Grinnell where she cared for her parents on the family farm. She has been a resident of St. Francis Manor since 2002. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and was active with the Grinnell Senior Center, the RSVP Kitchen Band and the MAC Choir.

She is survived by one sister, Alice Sleeth of Milwaukee and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Ray Hartzell and one sister Estella Hartzell.
