N.C. HARTZELL

Nathaniel C. Hartzell was born in Westmoreland county, Penn., on July 28, 1834. There he continued to live until 1851 when the family moved westward and settled in Hancock Co., Ill. In 1860 Mr. Hartzell was married and made for himself and wife a most comfortable home in the above named county, where they continued to live for the next seventeen years. Then they moved to Iowa and settled on a farm west of this city where the remainder of their days were lived out.

To Mr. and Mrs. Hartzell were born five children, four boys and one girl, all of whom are still living and were at the bedside of their father when he passed over to his heavenly home to occupy the mansion which the Dear Lord had gone to prepare for him and to meet the wife and mother who had gone before to await his coming. It was nearly six years ago that Mrs. Hartzell bade farewell to the husband and children to go to be with her Savior.

Mr. Hartzell was one of eight children all of whom preceded him save one brother who lives in Oklahoma, now in very poor health.

Mr. Hartzell departed this life last Wednesday, Aug. 7, 1907, after a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held from the home of his son, J.N. Hartzell, this afternoon conducted by J. Arthur Hurley, pastor of the Baptist church of this city, and the body was laid to rest beside that of his wife in Hazelwood cemetery to await the resurrection morn.

A quiet, unassuming man, Mr. Hartzell was one of our best citizens, absolutely trustworthy and honorable. His worth is best shown in the children who survive him, who received in childhood the training that has made them among our best and most honored citizens.
