Well Known and Respected Pioneer Of Community Dies Here Friday Evening.

Edward H. Hartzell, 66 years of age, died at a local hospital Friday at 6:30 p.m. Death is said to have been caused by pneumonia and complications. Mr. Hartzell was a long time resident of the Grinnell community and well known here. He is survived by his widow and son Harry.

Funeral services were held at the Smith Funeral home at 1103 Broad St. Sunday afternoon, and were attended by more persons than could be accomodated in the house. Rev. W.J. Fowler was in charge of the services, and burial was at Hazelwood cemetery. Pallbearers were Bert Johnson, Charles Fawcett, Charles Horak, Jonah Littrell, J.B. Heisel, and P.A. Madill.

Edward Hunter Hartzell, son of N.C. and Mary Hartzell, was born in Hancock county, Ill., November 15, 1866. The family of four boys and one girl came to Iowa in March, 1877, coming to Grinnell. The father and mother died several years ago, and the sister Ollie B. passed away five years ago.

Mr. Hartzell was married to Mary Berry, April 18, 1894, and one son, Harry, was born to this union. Harry lives on a farm west of Grinnell. Mr. Hartzell's brothers are also living. They are J.N., C.W. and Marion, all of Grinnell.

Mr. and Mrs. Hartzell lived on their farm near Grinnell for 39 years; neither moving to town or to any other farm. Mr. Hartzell had been deaf for several years, and three years ago had a stroke of paralysis. Last Monday he was taken to the hospital, but nothing could be done to save his life.

One by one old friends are going. The senior of the Herald regrets today the recording of the death of Edward Hartzell. Mr. Hartzell came to Grinnell with his parents in 1877 and the next winter was a pupil of the writer. His father's home was the former Benoni Howard home about a mile west of Grinnell on Fifth avenue. The school he attended was No. 6 in Grinnell township now Grant township. There were three Hartzell boys in school that winter, all quiet, modest boys of good habits and likeable dispositions. I have remembered the friendship of those days with much pleasure and one of the pleasures has been the knowledge that the Hartzell boys were always true to the best instincts in man, and the friendship cemented that winter by the position of teacher and pupil never weakened, but grew stronger as the years passsed by.

Ed Hartzell was a good man. He lived an honest upright life and those who knew him can say naught against his upright and serviceable character. If the world was peopled by men of the type of Ed Hartzell there would be nothing but harmony in the world, no bickering and no ambition to weaken human love and create human selfishness.
