MRS. SARAH T. ATWOOD

Mrs. Sarah T. Atwood departed this life Nov. 21, 1913, at the home of her son, W.H. Atwood, in Marshalltown. She had poor health for a number of years, and several months ago they thought she could not last long, but she rallied and was able to be up and about the house and the day before she passed away was able to go to the table for her meals. At 11 o'clock at night her son gave her a drink of water and she went to sleep and at 3 o'clock when they went to the bed they saw she had gone to the home from which no traveler has ever yet returned.

Mrs. Atwood was born in Ohio Oct. 8, 1841, which made her at time of death 72 years, 2 months and 12 days old. In 1861 she was united in marriage to David Atwood in Whiteside county, Ill., where they lived until 1883, when they came to Iowa, settling on a farm southeast of Newburg, where Mr. Atwood died thirteen years ago. Six children were born to this union, three boys and three girls. They are W.H. Atwood and M.J. Atwood of Marshalltown, J.B. Atwood of Grinnell, Mrs. Clara Dannen of Brownsville, Ore. Two daughters preceded their mother in death, Mrs.Elizabeth Sisco, who passed away sixteen years ago near Gilman, and Mrs. J.H. Alexander, who passed away four years ago in Marshalltown. Mrs. Atwood is also survived by three brothers and one sister. They are Thomas, William and John Turney, of Morrison, Ill., and Mrs. Jane Ray of Clinton, Iowa.

Thomas Turney and Mrs. Ray came several days before their sister passed away and with their brother John were present at the funeral. The three sons were present also, but the daughter could not be present. Other relatives present at the funeral services from a distance were J.H. Alexander and family of Grinnell, Floyd Stuart and wife, Roy Farum and wife of near Montezuma, N. Hartzel and Wm. Squire and wife of near Grinnell, and M.L. Sisco and wife of near Kellogg.

Mrs. Atwood was a loving mother and good neighbor. She was a member of the M.E. church and was faithful to the end. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.L. Wissler in the Congregtional church in Newburg and interment was in the Chester Center cemetery beside her husband.
