--Mrs. Martha M. Haskell, wife of William A. Carter, was born at Essex, Mass., Feb. 28, 1832, and died at Des Moines, Iowa, Aug. 11, 1898. Her early life was spent at Essex. She graduated from the State Normal School at Salem, Mass. At about the age of 16 she united with the Congregational church of Essex. In 1858 she came west to teach school. Having taught a year or more she was married to Wm. A. Carter at Rosemond, Ill., Nov. 29,1860. Five children were born in this family of whom Mrs. Katie Alderman now in Denver is the only survivor, the others dying in infancy, three of whom were buried in the Chester cemetery. The family came to Chester in 1863 bringing letters from the Congregational church of Rosemond, Ill., and uniting with the Congregational church in Grinnell. In 1865, June 25, they united with others to organize the Congregational church of Chester. After 10 years residence at Chester they removed to Malcom, becoming members of the Presbyterian church of that place, where they remained till 1881 when they went to Des Moines, which has since been their home.

They united with the Presbyterian church in East Des Moines. Mrs. Carter returned to her old home to visit her friends while still residing at Chester. She was always an efficient and faithful worker in her church service, much respected and beloved by all who knew her. Her funeral services was held at Chester where her body rests among her kindred. The service was conducted by Prof. Buck, assisted by Pastor Rowe of Chester.
