WILLIAM A. CARTER

Wm. A. Carter, who was one of the pioneers of this county, died at his home in Lamar, Mo., on Sunday, June 14th, and the body was brought to Chester for interment.

The deceased was born in Illinois, January 21, 1836, where he spent his boyhood days, on a farm.

He was united in marriage to Martha M. Haskell, November 29th, 1860.

To them were born five children, three sons and two daughters. The three sons and one daughter died in infancy. The living daughter is Mrs. Kate L. Alderman, of Anamosa, Iowa, who was present at the funeral.

Mr. Carter and family came to Iowa in 1862 and settled in Chester township, Poweshiek county, where he continued to make his home many years. For several years he was in business in Malcom and in 1881 moved to Des Moines and in 1901 to Lamar, Mo.

Mr. Carter was a very earnest Christian, and gave himself and his money to the cause he so much loved. He and his wife were charter members of the Chester Congregational church.

Mr. Carter was one of a committee of three who called a council for the organization of this church, June 25th, 1865. There were 16 charter members of this church. Those now living are: Henry Sherman (the only resident member), Mrs. Wheelock of Grinnell, Mrs. Ellen Fisher of Grinnell, Mr. and Mrs. John Lightner, and Mrs. L.J. Sherman.

It seemed to be the fitting thing to do to hold the last services for the deceased in the church and among the remaining old neighbors and friends where he had given years of his life and labor for the church.

At the funeral services held in the Chester church on Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Lincoln assisted the pastor, H.L. Wissler, and spoke of the splendid Christian character of the man.

Letters were read from former pastor and friends who knew him as a neighbor, friend and Christian worker, all testifying to the excellent spirit of this man, whose life had been an inspiration to all who knew him.

Mrs. Carter died August 11th, 1898.

Deceased leaves a sister, Mrs. Kate C. Clement, and one brother, S.C. Carter, both of Lamar, Mo., and his daughter, Mrs. Alderman, of Anamosa.

The body was laid to rest in the Chester cemetery.
