The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Aug. 6, 1918

MRS. JOHN P. CLEMENT

Catherine Carter was born July 27, 1829, and died August 2, 1918. October 18, 1864, she was united in marriage to John P. Clement. To them were born one son and two daughters: Carrie, who died in infancy; Eddie and Lizzie, who were both killed in the Grinnell cyclone of June 17, 1882. The sadness of the loss of these children was made all the greater by the fact that the husband and father had passed away on the tenth day of the previous month, thus leaving this wife and mother bereft of all the members of her own family in less than one month.

Mrs. Clement came to Chester in 1867 and, for years, she and her husband were members of this church. Later she moved to Grinnell. She was a sincere Christian woman, most freely and lovingly giving herself for the bearing of life's burdens. She heard the Master's words, "Bear ye one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ." Of her it could be said, as of that one who brought her offering to the Master: "She hath done what she could."

The funeral services were conducted from the Chester Congregational church on Sunday morning by Rev. H.L. Wissler of Gilbert, Iowa, and the body laid to rest in the Chester cemetery.
