OBITUARY.

Deacon J.P. Clement died at his residence in this place, Wednesday morning, the 10th inst., after an illness of about three weeks. His disease was meningitis.

Deacon Clement was born in Grafton County, New Hampshire, in 1825. He came West in 1855, first stopping at Perry, Ill. From there he moved to Chester in 1868. Bodily infirmities compelled him to abandon farming, and he moved to Grinnell several years since and has devoted most of his time to the insurance business. By nature he was an inventor, and if he had had the education of a machinist so that his hand could draft and fashion what his mind devised, many more of his inventions would have been successful. He was the inventor of the "Clement Windmill," which is one of the best as well as cheapest ever put on the market. One of his last inventions was a stock pump, which would have been an undoubted success if he had had the means to put it upon the market. He was also the inventor of several other machines which showed the inventive genius of the man.

As a man, he was honest and upright, doing quietly and efficiently whatever his hand found to do. He was an active member of the church, and his life was always consistent with his profession. His funeral was held yesterday at the Congregational Church in Chester and his remains were interred in the Chester burying ground, where other members of his family had already been laid. Dr. Sturtevant conducted the funeral exercises.
