MRS. RALPH SHERMAN IS LAID TO REST IN CHESTER CEMETERY
Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie Adelaide Sherman, wife of Ralph Sherman, who passed away Monday morning after an extended illness, were held on Wednesday afternoon at the James funeral home in charge of Rev. Leland W. Mann. Pallbearers, all grandsons, were Kenneth Vogt, Donald Vogt, Warren Dare, Richard Dare, Gene Gettys and Karl Wheat. Interment was made in Chester cemetery.
Mrs. Sherman was a member of a family which was closely connected with the beginnings of Poweshiek county. Her husband's father was one of the pioneer settlers of Chester township and for many years the Shermans had an active part in Chester history. Ralph Sherman served his county in the lower house of the state legislature and throughout the county's history Shermans have served in positions of trust and responsibility.
During her husband's term in the state house she was one of the founders and organizers of the Legislative Ladies' League.
Hattie Adelaide Foster was born August 1, 1871, in Scott county, the daughter of Thomas and Barbara Ann Matthews Foster. She was one of a family of 11 children.
In 1886 Adelaide came with her parents to Poweshiek county. The family settled in Chester township, where she grew to womanhood and attended the Grinnell Academy for two years. On Dec. 24, 1891, she was united in marriage with Ralph Sherman and they lived in the old Sherman homestead in Chester township until they moved to Grinnell. Six daughters were born to them, one dying in infancy. Surviving are the husband and five daughters, Mrs. Clarence Vogt of Grinnell, Mrs. Joe L. Gettys of Oskaloosa, Mrs. George Dare of Washington, Ia., Mrs. Curtis Nelson of Alexandria, Minn., and Mrs. W.W. Hise of Marshalltown, 11 living grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. There are also two brothers, Clyde and Eugene Foster of Grinnell.
For many years Mrs. Sherman was a member of the Chester Congregational church, transferring her membership to the Congregational church of Grinnell six years ago.
A woman of many fine qualities of mind and heart she will be remembered with affection and esteem by a large circle of friends.
