The Grinnell (IA) Herald; April 9, 1895

--Many both in Chester and Grinnell were pained to hear of the death of Mr. Horace James, which occurred at his residence on south Broad street Saturday evening, April 6th. Three weeks ago he contracted a heavy cold. Pneumonia developed, and after a brief illness of twelve days he quietly passed away. Mr. James was born in Pittsfield, N.H., December 26, *1847. In '66 he came to Chester and engaged in farming, enduring all the discomforts and hardships of those pioneer days on the prairies. Septebmer 9, 1871, he married Miss Ruth Rickard, who has been to him a most devoted, loving wife. Their home has always been a genial, happy home, in which it was a great pleasure to visit. Excepting brief periods in Grinnell and Cedar Rapids, the family home has always been in Chester. Mr.James was one of the earliest members of the Congregational church in Chester, and was a faithful attendant and supporter of all the church services. Many will remember him as a humble, consistent christian, modest, unassuming, never thrusting himself forward but faithfully performing every trust committed to him . While we sorrow with the bereaved wife and their three children sitting in the shadow of this heavy affliction, we rejoice with him in the brighter and more glorious life on which he has now entered. The funeral services were held at the family home this afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Mr. Vittum.
