JOHN C. BENNETT

John C. Bennett, 83, of Laurel died of a heart attack Monday, Sept. 20, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown, with the Rev. James Hougen, officiating. Zolene Melvin, organist, and vocalists Owen and Erin Englin will provide music.

Casket bearers will be Larry, Leslie, Roger and Ronnie Iverson and Keith and Paul Johnson. Honorary bearers will be his grandchildren, Jody Mae, Jeffrey and Jamie Bennett; Christin Barnes; David Allen; and Owen, Tony and Jim Englin.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Garden, Marshalltown.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning at noon Friday. The family will be present at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

He was born Dec. 20, 1915, in Grinnell to William and Fannie Ogden Bennett. He was raised in the Grinnell area and attended rural schools.

During World War II, Mr. Bennett served with the U.S. Army's 3rd Armored Division in Europe.

He was married to Esther Olga Iverson Jan. 10, 1943, at her parents' home near Grinnell. The couple farmed in Chester Township before moving to a farm near Kellogg in 1959. They moved to Laurel to farm in 1964 and had lived in Laurel for the past two years.

Mr. Bennett was a member of Elim Lutheran Church and served on the church's board of trustees. He also served on the boards of the Laurel Co-op Elevator and the Marshall County ASCS.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Daryl of Laurel; two daughters, Carolyn Allen of Anchorage, Alaska, and Marlene Englin of Audubon; eight grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Hohs of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson and one sister, Lillian Sears.

Memorial contributions may be directed to his church or to the Laurel First Responders.
