LAVERNE SEARS THOMPSON

Laverne Sears Thompson, 91, of Tama, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 14, at 10:30 a.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. Interment will follow at Haven Cemetery in rural Tama. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama. A memorial fund has been established.

Laverne was born on Nov. 12, 1919, in Grinnell, the son of Maurice B. and Lois Sears Thompson. Laverne farmed his entire life in the Haven area. He also served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Laverne was united in marriage wtih Alice Osborn Wiese on June 25, 1984, in Memphis, Mo. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Laverne enjoyed fishing, gardening, bowling, card-playing and fried chicken.

He is survived by three sons, Kent Wiese of Chelsea, Dennis Wiese of Belle Plaine, and Craig Wiese of Conrad; two daughters, Sara Feisel of Tama and Carol Garcia of Greeley, Colo.; three sisters, Helen Stephens of Toledo, Doris Flanagan of Ames, and Mary Lee McCurry of Grinnell; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and several other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Alice in 2000; and one grandson.
