BESSIE EBERT SERVICES SET
Bessie Ebert, 77, died Friday evening, May 20, at St. Francis Manor, where she had lived since 1979.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Revs. Peter and Allyson Sawtell, co-pastors of the Newburg/Chester parish of the United Church of Chirst, officiating. Organist will be Alice Renaud, and pallbearers will be Jeffrey Ebert, Cal Hess, Glen Mikel, Gary McClenathan, Roger McClenathan, Terry McClenathan, Chuck Johnson and Curt Johnson. Burial will be at the Chester Cemetery.
Memorials in Mrs. Ebert's name may be made to the Newburg Park Fund and left at the funeral home.
The daughter of Milton B. and Lydia Anne Scott Gaugh, she was born Dec. 27, 1905, at Sullivan, Mo. She lived at Sullivan and St. Clair, Mo., before coming to Iowa. On April 20, 1927, she was married to Frederick Henry Ebert at Marshalltown. The couple farmed in the Laurel, Gilman and Newburg areas until 1941 when they moved to Newburg.
Mrs. Ebert was active in Newburg community affairs and had served as a longtime correspondent for The Grinnell Herald-Register. She had also worked as a nurse's aide at St. Francis and Grinnell General hospitals and had cared for families in their homes.
Survivors include her children, Mary Lou Mikel of Rte. 3, Richard D. Ebert of Rte. 3 and Frederick H. Ebert of Spanaway, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Margaret Wickliff of Newton; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two half-sisters and one half-brother, Mildred Wickliff of Newton and Jessie Gullett and Chauncey Johnson, both of St. Clair, Mo.; and a stepsister, Mattie Nappier of St. Clair.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1959; two stepsisters, Lottie Schallenberg and Hattie Tomlinson; and one stepbrother, Charles Johnson.
