RUSSELL C. LADELY, 101

Russell C. Ladely, 101, of Ewart, Iowa, died peacefully Saturday March 23, 2002 at the Richfield Healthcare Center at Richfield, Minnesota.

He was born February 8, 1901 at Deep River, Iowa, the son of Frank and Jenny (Allum) Ladely. At age 8 he went to live with a relative and has been on his own since that time. He joined the US Navy in 1920 and was assigned to the USS Olympia. He was on the last voyage of the ship from France to the United States. This voyage also brought home the Unknown Soldier from WWI who is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Russell also marched in the parade for the Unknown Soldier. On February 4, 1927 he was united in marriage with Dorothy B. Sanders at New Sharon, Iowa. Mary Lou, their daughter, came into their lives in 1946. Russell was a horse trainer in his early years. Horses were his interest. They bought and farmed together north of Ewart, Iowa. They lived there for 51 years. He always considered himself an Iowa farmer. They liked to travel and in later years also traveled to Germany. Russell kept current on events by reading the paper everyday.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy on May 21, 1997; five sisters and five brothers.

Russell is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jerry Iverson of Apple Valley, Minnesota; three grandsons, Matthew, Dave and girlfriend Shareen, and Jon; three great grand children, Jeffrey Michael, Bret Andrew, and Brianna Kjersty; and other relatives and friends.

Russell C. Ladely, 101, of Ewart, died Saturday, March 23, at Richfield Healthcare Center, Richfield, MN.

A funeral was March 27 at Watts Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Zirelbach officiating. Casket bearers were Matthew Iverson, David Iverson, Jon Iverson, Bill Schultz, Paul Pargeon, Paul Vanroekle. Military graveside rites were performed in Pleasant Township Cemetery, Ewart, by members of the Blakely-Stevens Legion Post=No. 169, Montezuma. Memorials are to Richfield Health Center.

Mr. Ladely was born February 8, 1901, in Deep Rivers, the son of Frank and Jenny (Allum) Ladely. At age 8, he went to live with a relative.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Iverson of Apple Valley, MN, three grandsons, and 3 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, five sister and five brothers.
