FORMER GRINNELLL MAN PASSES

Word has been received from Mrs. Hubbard Park of Morgan Hill, California, of the death of her father, Mr. George W. Tallmon, January 28th, 1928, after a brief illness with the flu.

Mr. Tallmon was for many years a resident of Grinnell, going with his family to California twenty five years ago, having come here from Scott County.

When Grinnell College was located in Davenport, Mr. Tallmon was a student in the college. He afterwaard taught school, and was united in marriage with one of his pupils, Miss Susan Carhart. Twelve children were born to them, six of whom graduated from Grinnell High School, and four from Grinnell College, and three from the University of California.

Mrs. Tallmon passed away in 1890. The home has been beautifully maintained by daughters, who kept the home the same haven of comfort and source of inspiration and hospitality that it had been during the mother's lifetime. Mr. Tallmon was a true father, a congenial companion to his children, encouraging them in their ambitions for an education, and rejoicing in their achievements. His daughter Margaret was a graduate nurse, his daughter Susan was a graduate of the Woman's Medical college of the Northwestern University, Chicago, practiced medicine in Berkeley, and was a missionary in China fourteen years. His daughter Hester who has been his home maker in recent years was a home missionary, teaching in a university in Texas two years; and his daughter Edith, a kindergarten graduate, was a missionary in China ten years.

Mr. Tallmon was a man of upright character, of fine mentality, highly gifed in writing interesting letters, and a devout Christian. He served his country in the Civil War. His declining years were spent comfortably and pleasantly on his fruit ranch near Morgan Hill, very near the home of his son George A. Tallmon, who lives on the adjoining fruit ranch. Mr. Tallmon's ninetieth birthday anniversary was celebrated October 12, 1927, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hubbard Park, at Morgan Hill, at which occasion twenty of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were with him at the birthday dinner.

George W. Tallmon was born October 12, 1837, died January 28, 1928. Funeral services were held in San Jose, California, January 30th. Burial was at San Jose.

Four children preceded their father in death. Grace, born near Davenport, Iowa, January 13, 1863, died at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, March 23, 1864.

Ada, born at Morganzia, Louisiana, Jan. 18, 1865, died at Grinnell, Iowa, August 10, 1877.

John, who was a soldier in the cavalry on the Mexican border, died in 1902.

Angie, Mrs. Burton Jones, died at her home in Oregon, six years ago.

Eight children survive their father:

Clara, Mrs. Lynds Jones, living in Oberlin, Ohio.

George A. Tallmon, Morgan Hill, Calif.

Susan, Mrs. Benjamin F. Sargent, Berkeley, Calif.

Lucy, Mrs. Harry Miler, Berkeley.

Margaret, Mrs. Leslie Rutherford, Peoria, Illinois.
