GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL HERE IN 1888

Mr. Tallmon, and His Fine Family Are Still Cordially Remembered in Grinnell
--------------------

Geo. A. Tallmon, a former Grinnell boy, died a few days ago. His home was Morgan Hill, Calif. A letter of this effect has been received by Miss Ada Park from Mr. Tallmon's sister, Mrs. Hubbard Park. Mr. Tallmon graduated from the Grinnell high school in 1888. He was a fine young boy. Later he entered the Salvation army and took up his work and later still he married and settled down at Morgan Hill. Several letters have been received from him the last few years and parts of them were published in The HERALD.

Mr. Tallmon's father and mother were fine people. The father was a country school teacher and also taught in the Grinnell schools. His home was west Eighth avenue where Mrs. Johnson now lives.

Mr. and Mrs. Tallmon, Sr., were the parents of nine children, two of whom were boys, Geo. A. and John. Both were active, influential and honorable. Geo. Tallmon, who has just died, was the father of ten living children.

The obituary prepared by Miss Ada Park, is as follows:

Mr. Tallmon, who was 61 years old, was a leading orchardist in this vicinity for the last thirty years. He was well known to and beloved by a large acquaintance and a host of friends. He had been ill for the last six weeks, most of the time being a patient in the hospital in San Jose.

Mr. Tallmon passed away last Wednesday morning. Though he had been ill for several weeks his death came as a distinct shock to his many friends here.

Upon moving here Mr. Tallmon immmediately identifed himself with the life of the community. For the past twelve years he had been clerk of the Grammar school board, and he was also a member of the Grange. He was always active and interested in any movement for the uplift of the community.

Although Mr. Tallmon was engaged in the Salvation Army work for the ten years prior to coming to Morgan Hill, upon moving here he immediately became interested in the Methodist Episcopal church, later transfering his membership to it. He was active in all its different departments at one time or another. For the last fourteen years he had served as superintendent of the Sunday school.

Mr. Tallmon was a man of unusually high character. Throughout the community he was known and beloved for his consistent Christian life. Always thinking of others he gladly gave himself unsparingly in their service. The community will sadly miss his cheery smile and kindly spirit.

Geo. Albert Tallmon was born on May 13, 1871, in Jasper county, Iowa. On June 24, 1897, he married Emma Shaffer of Keokuk, Iowa. To them twelve children were born. Two preceded their father in death, George, who died in infancy, and John, who died four years ago.

Mr. Tallmon leaves besides his wife, the following members of his family: Mrs. Edith T. Walker of Salinas; Mrs. Bessie T. Walker, Palo Alto; Prof. Raymond Tallmon of College City; Willard B. Tallmon of Berkeley; Susan W., Donald S., Alice M., Dorothy H., Evelyn R., and Melvin E. Tallmon of Morgan Hill, and the following sisters: Mrs. Lynds Jones, Oberlin, Ohio; Dr. Susan T. Sargeant of Berkeley; Mrs. Harry Miler of Berkeley, Mrs. L.D. Smith of Berkeley; Mrs. Margaret Rutherford of Peoria, Ill.; Mrs. Hubbard Park of Morgan Hill; Miss Hester Tallmon of Morgan Hill, and 11 grandchildren.
