ANNIE SANDERS, FORMER RESIDENT, SUCCUMBS FRIDAY
Miss Annie Sanders, 91, a former resident of Grinnell, passed away Friday afternoon at a hospital in Martinez, California. She had been in failing health for several years and had moved to California to be near her brother.
Funeral services for Miss Sanders will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist church with the Rev. C.E. Kingsley, pastor of the Memorial Baptist church, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and the Rev. Wayne Shireman, pastor of the First Baptist church officiating.
Burial will be in Hazelwoood Cemetery. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
The daughter of J. Howard and Betsie Taylor Sanders, she was born in Chester Township on February 23, 1873. She attended the country school near the family farm home until she was 11 years old and she and her brother drove by buggy to Grinnell to finish her schooling, graduating from Grinnell high school with the class of 1890.
Miss Sanders graduated from Grinnell College in 1895 and had 2 1/2 years of nurses' training in Boston, Massachusetts.
Returning to Grinnell, she was the city nurse for many years as well as nursing throughout the community for almost 50 years.
Miss Sanders was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, who passedd away as a child. She is survived by her brother, Edwin Sanders of LaFayette, California; a niece, Mrs. D.M. (Ruth) Hatfield of Berkeley, California; and three great nieces.
