The Grinnell (IA) Herald; Dec. 26, 1911

MRS. GEORGE W. BATEHAM

The body of Mrs. George W. Bateham, one of Grinnell's old settlers, was brought to Grinnell this morning from Des Moines, where she died on Sunday, December 24, at the home of her son, Milton S. Bateham, with whom she has made her home most of the time for the past few years. Funeral services were conducted at the grave by Rev. Elias Handy. Mr. and Mrs. Milton S. Bateham and Mrs. J.W. Roy, of Oakland, Iowa, a daughter, with her husband, accompanied the body to Grinnell.

Mary Sarah Rainey was born in Spaulding, England, February 28, 1849 and came to Grinnell in the spring of 1866. She was married in 1867 to George W. Bateham, who died on July 17, 1887. Three children survive, the two already mentioned, and Benjamin F., of Los Angeles, who was prevented by distance from attending the funeral.

Mrs. Bateham passed away after an illness of five years, during which she was a cheerful and uncomplaining sufferer. Throughout her life she was a consistent member of the Episcopal Church of England and passed away strong in her faith. She will be greatly missed by the many old friends who learned to love her during her long residence here.
