GILMAN FARMER DIES IN CRASH

A Gilman-area farmer was killed early Wednesday when his car hit a sheet of ice near the junction of County Road E-69 and U.S. Highway 63 in Tama County.

J. Clark Scurr, 80, of Rte. 2, Gilman, was pronounced dead at the scene by Tama County Deputy Medical Examiner Dennis Mallory, D.O.

A passenger in the Scurr car, Orville T. Asp, 71, of Rte. 1, Gilman, was taken to Grinnell General Hospital for treatment of chest injuries.

A spokesman for the Tama County Sheriff's Department said Scurr was eastbound on E-69 some seven miles southwest of Tama, crested a hill and skidded on the ice.

The car went off the left side of the road, striking a guy wire attached to an electrical pole, then struck a farm loading chute near a fence. The car went through the fence and rolled on its top.

Scurr's 1978 Oldsmobile was demolished.
