ELMER URFER

Elmer Allen Urfer was born Aug. 15, 1916 in rural Malcom, the son of Frank and Bertha Urfer.

He attended rural school near the family home and was a graduate of Malcom High School with the class of 1934. After graduation he helped his dad on the farm until being drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1941. He served many months overseas during World War II and was honorably discharged in December 1945.

On May 30, 1946 he was united in marriage with Vera Peterson at Montezuma. They were to have observed their 50th anniversary this year. To this union four sons were born.

He farmed the family farm, was a conservation aid for Poweshiek County Conservation, helped his son tile and was never too busy to help the rest of his family when needed.

He was a member of Midway Grange, Blakley-Stevens American Legion Post No. 169 of Montezuma, Farm Bureau and the Montezuma United Methodist Church.

Elmer passed away April 26 at his home, which was the same house where he was born, at the age of 79 years, eight months and nine days.

He is survived by his wife, Vera; four sons and their wives, Sam and Peggy of Moscow Mills, Mo., Ron and Nancy of Montezuma, Don and Marla of Newton and Jim and Gina of Malcom; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and other relatives and many friends.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Paul Urfer and one sister, Florence Norton.

Funeral was held April 29 at the Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma. Officiating - Rev. Brian Carter, United Methodist Church in Montezuma. Congregational Hymn - "How Great Thou Art," Mrs. Kathleen Ramsey, organist. Recorded selections - "Grandpa" and "Once in a While." Casket bearers - David Urfer, Nathan Urfer, Josh Urfer, Jay Martin, Steve Heck and Franklin Norton. Flower attendants - Frank and Carol Helm. Military graveside rites conducted by members of Blakley-Stevens Legion Post No. 169. Interment was at Jackson Township Cemetery.
