JEANETTE SCHALINSKE

Jeannette M. Schalinske, 78, of Grinnell died Monday, June 9, 2003, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was held Thursday, June 12, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Officiating was the Rev. Stephen Jasch, pastor of the church. Organist was Margaret Amo. Casket bearers were Jim Urfer, Scott Beach, Donald Sundell, Gary Wilson, James Tedford and Jack Templeton. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to her church or to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma.

She was born May 26, 1925, in Larchwood, the daughter of John and Inger Christensen Petersen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She graduated from Lake Center High School in 1943, then attended business college in Mankato, Minn. During World War II she worked for the United States Navy at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago, Ill.

She was married on June 24, 1946, in Blue Island, Ill., to Paul Schalinske in a ceremony performed by the groom's father, the Rev. E.C. Schalinske. Following their marriage they lived in Newton, then moved to Grinnell in 1952, where they operated James-Schalinske Funeral Home which they sold in 1975. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where she taught second grade Sunday School for ten years, and was active in its Mary-Martha Circle. She was the first activity director at Friendship Manor Nurisng Home, was a member of Grinnell Federated Women's Club, Chapter AU, T.T.T., and Iowa Preceptor Beta Micron chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Finney of Roseburg, Oregon, and Judith Bone of Tony, Wis.; two sons, Jerrold Schalinske of Burnsville, Minn., and John Schalinske of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren and one brother, Moris Petersen of Waterloo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and five brothers and sisters.
