Funeral Services will Be Held Tomorrow Morning at 9:30; Burial at Brooklyn

John L. Whelan was born at Elkhorn, Wis., March 3, 1853, and died at his home at Tacoma, Wash., August 7, 1933, at age of 80 Years, 5 months and 5 days. He was the second oldest of a family of eleven children, and came to Iowa in a covered wagon with his parents when he was 14 years of age, locating at Tama, Iowa, later moving to a farm near Chester Center, north of Grinnell.

In 1882 Mr. Whelan moved to Galva, Iowa, where he engaged in farming. In 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Emerick of Brooklyn and they continued to make Galva their home until 1902, then locating on a farm near Brooklyn, Iowa. In 1911 they moved to Grinnell, where they resided until the death of Mrs. Whelan in 1924. Mr. Whelan then made his home with his son at Belle Plaine.

In 1927 he was married to Mrs. Emma Powers of Tacoma, Wash., and lived at that place until his death. He was taken ill last January and remained bedfast from that time. Mr. Whelan leaves besides his widow, one son, R.L. Whelan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a brother, A.F. Whelan of Dodge City, Kansas, and a sister, Mrs. Eva Cannon of Storm Lake, Iowa. He affiliated with the Methodist church in early life and continued a faithful member until the end. He was a member of the Masonic and Eastern Star Orders, also the Modern Woodmen of America.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning at 9:30 from the Methodist church in Grinnell, conducted by Rev. W.J. Fowler. Burial will be in the family lot in Brooklyn. The Masons will be in charge of the services at the grave. Pallbearers will be F.F. Clindinin, D.M. Cox, F.S. Edge, Dr. J.W. Souter, R.G. Coutts and Ross V. Coutts.
