LEE EMMERT SERVICES HELD

Lee E. Emmert, 74, a longtime farmer in Chester Township, died Sunday evening at Grinnell General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert L. Hempel, pastor of Newburg-Chester parish of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Donald Renaud, organist, and Mr. and Mrs. Delmar Sharp and Mr. and Virgil Palmer, vocalists. Pallbearers were Kirk Emmert, Patrick Allen, Jerry Jantzen, Gary Lewellyn, Dale Emmert and David Strovers. Honorary pallbearers were Frank Brown, Tracy Lidtka, Bill Sutton, Earl Graham, William Stayton and George Graff. Flower bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Squire and Mr. and Mrs. Harold McCulloch.

The son of Andrew and Lela Drew Emmert, he was born Feb. 18, 1902, in Lynnville. He attended rural school near Kellogg.

Mr. Emmert was active in a construction business with his father and brothers before moving to his farm home in 1927. He was a member of the Sonora Grange and the Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; his children, Marvin E. and Willard A. Emmert, both of rural Grinnell, Mrs. Larry (Shirley) Starnes of Newburg, and Mrs. Harold (Betty) Jantzen of the Sheridan community; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and four brothers, Theo of Killduff, Earl of the Sheridan community, and Everett and Lowell of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gay Bakke, in 1932; his parents; and a sister, Mrs. Clifford (Dorothy) Baker.
