MARY EMMERT

Mary Emmert, 91, of Grinnell died Thursday, July 14, at Friendship Manor Care Center in Grinnell.

A funeral service for Mary Emmert was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18, at the Smith Funeral Home with burial at Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell following.

She was the daughter of John William Allen and Zoa Daniels, born on March 14, 1914, south of Newton in rural Jasper County. She was educated in Newton schools and graduated from Newton High School with the class of 1932.

She married Lee Edward Emmert on Feb. 11, 1933, at the Jasper County Courthouse. The couple would have three children, Marvin, Willard and Shirley. They moved to Chester Township, north of Grinnell, and farmed together.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who looked forward to traveling and spending time with her family across the United States. She enjoyed baking, cooking and canning fruits and vegetables she picked from her garden. She spent hours caring for animals on the farm.

She was a member of the Sonora Grange and a past leader of 4-H clubs. She was also a dedicated member of the Newburg-Chester Congregational Ladies Fellowship group and of the church.

She is survived by her son, Willard, of Grinnell; her daughter, Shirley S. Starnes, also of Grinnell; her step-daughter, Betty Jensen of Tama; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, John "Bud" William Allen II and Robert L. Allen; her sisters, Alice Strovers and Marjorie Lewellyn; and her son, Marvin Emmert.
