CARROLL E. KRIEGEL

Carroll E. Kriegel, 59, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Grinnell, died Sunday, Jan. 26, at his home of cancer.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Smith Funeral Home with John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers were Cleon, Curt and Lonnie Kriegel, Larry and Roger Iverson and Rick Peters. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll E. Kriegel Memorial Fund.

He was born March 7, 1943, in Poweshiek County, the son of George and Ellen Loftin Kriegel. He was a 1961 graduate of Tri-County North High School near What Cheer. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts. He was married on Dec. 21, 1962, in Grinnell to Alice Emmert. The couple lived in Grinnell and later in Des Moines prior to moving to Cedar Rapids in 1969. Following the death of his wife in 1988, he was married on July 2, 1994, at the Litle Brown Church in Nashua to Patricia Tierney. The couple continued to live in Cedar Rapids.

He was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation for 39 years, retiring in 2001. He enjoyed NASCAR, traveling to the Mississippi River and working in his yard.

He is survived by his wife Pat of Cedar Rapids; two daughters Tricia Petersen of Des Moines and Mary Beth Fenske of Grinnell; one stepson Charles Tierney of Cedar Rapids; one brother Cleon Kriegel of Tama and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents snd his first wife, Alice.
