HARRY 'JOE' SHIMP

Harry Joseph "Joe" Shimp, 81, of Grinnell died of cancer Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday at the Grinnell Christian Church, with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Organist was Jolene Jones, and pallbearers were Jim Anderson, Neil Bortell, Aaron Corbin, Ken Crandall, Bruce Heidebaugh and Jim McIlrath.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

He was the son of Harry L. and Flora Colver Shimp and was born Oct. 16, 1915, in Lucas County. He received his education in the Chariton School District and served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was married to Wanda Junkin Oct. 5, 1940, in Chariton. They moved to Fairfield in 1941 and returned to Chariton in 1943. Mr. Shimp was employed as an independent trucker.

In 1955 they moved to Grinnell where Mr. Shimp was employed with Skelgas, Thermogas and Farm Service. He later worked for the city of Grinnell at the Water Department and was custodian at the Memorial Building for several years.

He was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Audrey Reitzler of Malcom; two brothers, Melvin of Des Moines and Marvin of Marquette, Mich.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Carl, Verl and Howard; one sister, Velma Lewis; and one granddaughter.
