FRED COCHRAN

John Fredrick Cochran, son of John and Ida Mayo Cochran was born December 26, 1895 at Deep River, and passed away May 17, 1984 in the VA Hospital at Iowa City at 88 years of age.

He attended high school in Deep River and attended business college in Cedar Rapids. On May 17, 1922 he was united in marriage to Gladys Murphy at Deep River. To this union one son was born. After their marriage they lived in Guernsey where Fred worked in a bank. He served in the U.S. Army during WW I. In 1934 they moved to Montezuma where he served as deputy sheriff for six years and Poweshiek County Sheriff for 14 years. He also worked in the Montezuma Light Plant until his retirement. Since 1978 they had made their home in Oskaloosa.

He was a member of the American Legion at Guernsey and Montezuma, a charter member of the Montezuma Lions Club and a long time school board member.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and two brothers.

Fred is survived by his wife, Gladys of Oskaloosa; their son and his wife, Darrell and Maxine Cochran of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren, one sister, one brother and nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday, May 19 at 2 p.m. in Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma with the Rev. Glenn Hulsebus officiating. Casket bearers were members of the Blakley-Stevens Legion Post 169. Military Rites were held. Interment was at Guernsey Cemetery, Guernsey.
