CHESTER HUMMEL SERVICES SATURDAY

Chester Young Hummel, 79, of 1504 Summer St., Grinnell, died Wednesday afternoon at Grinnell General Hospital East. He had been in failing health the past four years.

The son of Seth and Sarah Moore Hummel, Mr. Hummel was born June 11, 1888 on the Hummel family farm north of Kellogg. He attended the local rural schools near his home. On Feb. 16, 1916, he married Cora Reynolds Hummel in Marshalltown.

Mr. and Mrs. Hummel had farmed north of Kellogg until about 1919 when they moved to a farm (east?) of Grinnell. In 1934 they retired from farming and moved to Grinnell where Mr. Hummel was active in his own monument business for many years.

Mr. Hummel had been a member of the Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 273 of Grinnell for nearly 50 years.

Survivors include his wife Cora, a step-son, Kenneth Hummel of Phoenix, Ariz., a step grandson, Donald Hummel of Wichita, Kan., a step great granddaughter at the home in Wichita, one brother Seth Rufus Hummel of Waterloo, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hummel was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Cordelia Walker, and two brothers, Kenneth and Frank Hummel.

Funeral services for Mr. Hummel will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester Custer, pastor of the Grinnell Methodist Church, officiating.

Vocal music will be provided by Ed Bohstedt, accompanied by Mrs. Willard Heffner, organist.

Masonic Rites will be conducted by members of Hermon Lodge No. 273, Grinnell, with burial in Hazelwood cemetery.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
