LINA HUMMEL SERVICES HELD

Lina Mae Hummel, 72, the wife of S. Rufus Hummel of Waterloo, died late Sunday evening, July 21, at Woodlawn Nursing Home in Waterloo.

The daughter of Theodore J. and Addie O. Lamb Mehlin, she was born Sept. 20, 1901, near Grinnell. She attended the rural school near her home.

On March 3, 1921, she was married to Seth Rufus Hummel in Grinnell. The couple had two children, Junior Hummel of Riceville and Maxine Hummel who died in infancy.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Hummel farmed near Grinnell for about 15 years, at which time they moved to Waterloo to make their home. Mrs. Hummel worked as a cook in several Waterloo restaurants until her retirement in 1964.

Survivors include her husband; her son; six grandchildren, Nancy, Jane, Tom, Terry, Sandy and Barbara Hummel of Riceville; four brothers, Leslie T. Mehlin of Grinnell, Ray T. Mehlin of Onamia, Minn., Charles F. Mehlin of Waterloo and Wayne V. Mehlin of Onamia; and one sister, Mrs. Leonard (Augusta) Pederson of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hummel were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 25, at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John W. McCallum, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner, and pallbearers were Maynard Durr, Alvin Hummel, Gary Mehlin, Ronnie Mehlin, Don Pederson and Gene Wayne.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
