MR. HUMMEL RITES TODAY

Seth Rufus Hummel, 78, of Waterloo, formerly of Grinnell, died Friday, April 18, at the Howard County Hospital in Cresco.

Funeral services for Mr. Hummel were held at 1 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John W. McCallum, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner. Pallbearers were Claude Brown, Maynard Durr, Alvin Hummel, Jack Mayer, Charles Mehlin and Don Pederson. Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Seth and Sarah Moore Hummel, he was born Sept. 30, 1896, near Kellogg. He attended rural school near his home, and later he served with the U.S. Army during World War I.

On March 3, 1921, he was married to Lina Mae Mehlin in Grinnell. The couple had two children. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Hummel farmed near Grinnell for 15 years. They moved to Waterloo in 1938 where Mr. Hummell was associated with Briggs Trucking Line. Mrs. Hummell died July 21, 1974.

Mr. Hummel is survived by his son, Junior Hummel of Riceville; six grandchildren, Nancy, Jane, Tom, Terry, Sandy and Barbara, all of Riceville; two brothers, Franklin M. Hummel and Chester Y. Hummel, both of Des Moines; and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Walker of Des Moines and Martha and Mary of California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lina; his daughter, Maxine, who died in infancy in 1922; his parents; and one brother, Kenneth O. Hummel, who died in 1914.
