ART H. GROSENBACH, 87

Art H. Grosenbach, 87, of Grinnell, died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at Friendship Manor Care Center in Grinnell.

A committal service was held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Oakland Acres Golf Course west of Grinnell and military rites were accorded by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

A reception was held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Grinnell Eagles Club to celebrate and share memories of his life.

Memorials may be designated to the Art H. Grosenbach Memorial Fund to benefit several organizations of the family's choice. Friends may share memories and condolences with the family at wwww.smithfh.com.

Arthur Henry Grosenbach was born Oct. 22, 1921, to Albert John and Edith William Grosenbach in Melvin, Ill. He moved with his family in 1927 to Kaskaskia Island, located between Illinois and Missouri, and later that year they moved to the Algona area. In 1934, the family made their permanent home in Grinnell.

On March 3, 1946, Art was united in marriage with Frances "Bubs" Louise Elrod in Indianapolis, Ind. He enlisted in the United States Naval Air Corp in Des Moines, in August of 1942. He was honorably discharged as a second class petty officer aviation machinist mate in Minneapolis, Minn., in February of 1946.

In their early years, the couple farmed and had a dairy herd in the Poweshiek County area. He then worked at Miracle Recreation in Grinnell, was a salesman at Maples Chevrolet in Newton, and was the Justice of the Peace for Grinnell. Most recently, he worked at Oakland Acres Golf Course mowing the greens.

Art accomplished many things over the years. He was honored to be in Grinnell's Hall of Fame for third basemen in softball. He was an all-conference bowler and served on several boards during his lifetime, which included the Elks Lodge, Eagles Club, the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He served on the board of trustees at the Eagles for several years.

Art is survived by his children, Johnnie "A.J." Grosenbach and his wife Marcia of Grinnell, Susan Schultz of Montgomery, Ala., Barbara Schultz, and husband, Tim, of Grinnell, Sharon "Sherry' Clayton of Grinnell; his former wife, Frances "Bubs" Grosenbach of Grinnell; his grandsons, Andy and Shawn Grosenbach, and Barry and Bill Schultz; his granddaughters, Cassie, Shannon and Amber Schultz; and his four great-grandchildren.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Alberta Miller; his brothers, Emory, Milton, and Gerald.
