AN OBITUARY OF SETH HUMMEL

Seth Hummel, son of Mathias and Louisa Hummel, was born Jan. 27, 1848 in Marietta, Ohio and died May 31st at the home of his son Rufus. He had been failing in health the past year, having suffered a stroke of apoplexy a year ago. Mr. Hummel came to Iowa in 1856 with his parents and settled on a farm northwest of Kellogg where his early boyhood days were spent. He was united in marriage to Sarah Moore at Glidden, Iowa November 12, 1879. To this union five children were born, Chester and Rufus Hummel of Grinnell, Mrs. Cordelia Walker of Marshalltown. Two sons Kenneth and Frank preceded him in death. A pair of twins Mrs. John Foith of Marshalltown, Mrs. Robert McConkey of Des Moines whom Mr. and Mrs. Hummel reared from childhood and nine grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Hummel died 1920 in Marshalltown.

Mr. Hummel spent his entire life in Jasper and Poweshiek counties with exception of seven years in Des Moines and two years in Marshalltown.

Since Mrs. Hummel's death, Mr. Hummel has been making his home with his sons. He was a member of the Presbyterian church all of his life and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Grinnell.

Funeral services, conducted by Dr. W.W. Bolt, were held Monday afternoon from the home of his son, S.R. Hummel, northeast of Grinnell. Burial was at Hazelwood cemetery.

Pallbearers were: John Mehlin, F.F. Clindinin, Tom Eastridge, Frank Shults, Grant Ramsey and Ross Coutts.
