KATHARINE MCDOWELL

Katharine Krumm McDowell, 90, of Grinnell died from complications of a stroke Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with Dr. Harold V. Brown, interim pastor of Northside Evangelical Free Methodist Church, and the Rev. Ken Wallace, pastor of the Newburg-Chester United Church of Christ, officiating. Organist will be Anedra Sherwood, and vocalists will be Linda and John Ryal.

Casket bearers will be Jerry Edwards; Claude, Dave, John and Wesley Krumm; Lowell Sherwood; Bill Ward and Clark Weaver. Honorary bearers will be Jim Booth, Rex McDowell, Arlys Haywood, Harold Mathes, Valentine Mathes, Raymond McDowell and Jim Savage. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery southwest of Grinnell.

Friends may call at the Smsith Funeral Home beginning at 9 a.m. Friday. The family will be present at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

She was born Dec. 5, 1907, in Jasper County to Henry and Katharina Mathes Krumm. She was raised on the farm and attended Washington No. 3 School.

She was married to Carl Roscoe McDowell Nov. 17, 1942, in Ottumwa. They lived on a farm south of Grinnell where they owned and ran a truck farm and gardening operation for many years. Following her husband's death in 1974, she was active with the Retired Senior Volunteer Persons and Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging. She was also active in Share and other community organizations. She had attended the Southside Friends and Westfield churches and was active in the Northside Evangelical Free Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Daniel of Grinnell; one daughter, Mary McVay of Prole; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and one brother, John Krumm of Grinnell.

She was preceded in death by her husband and 10 brothers, Phillip, Valentine, Jacob, Marion, Jasper, Adolph, Rudolph, Henry, Paul and David.

Memorials may be directed to the Westfield Cemetery Association.
